| Wilo Daniel a.k.a Wilo Boy |
Wilo Daniel a.k.a Wilo Boy first caught my attention with his remix to Karole Kasita's hit song "balance". We caught up with him to discuss his journey so far and here is an excerpt of the interview.
QN. Tell me about your journey in music, how did you start?
A. I literally started just like any lover of music, singing, humming and dancing to music right from childhood. This wasn't enough, i was tempted to be actively involved in the music industry. I loved hip hop and lingala therefore I decided to learn how to rap in Senior one (S1).
QN. Which year was that?
A. 2010
QN. How did you handle the process?
A. we used to do battles in class and all that type of thing, we later formed a Christian rap group where we could perform in churches. This in turn forced me to join the choir where i learnt how to sing. In senior six i left hip hop for RnB however money for studio time Wasn't easy to get since my parents were against me doing music (they still are).
I managed to record my first demo in 2018. The song was poorly received since the production was lacking. With lots of criticisms I had to come back stronger and opportunity came in the form of balance remix.
QN. Did you get a green light from karole kasita to remix her song?
A. A friend of mine works with her, this friend came to our place in Mukono saying Karole Kasita had released the stems of her song balance and that whoever wanted to do a remix could jump on it, so i got the stems, went to studio and recorded a demo. We sent it to her and she approved it
QN. How did it feel working on that remix, considering karole is already mainstream and a 'big' artist for that matter?
A. It was quite an opportunity for me. I knew if I released a good remix complete with visuals featuring Karole Kasita, it would be a huge stepping stone for me.
QN. How has it (your remix) been received by the public?
A. Many like it and rate it the best while some say if I'd released it with the video, it would have surpassed other remixes.
QN. Don't you think you are living in the bubble of Balance as an artist?. Won't the fame of Karole's balance overshadow you?
A. When it is a remix, people yearn to know who the other new person in the song is so it would be a good sail. I am just trying to use it as a stepping stone.
QN. Which genre are you most comfortable with?
A. Afro beat/Afro fusion
QN. How many afrobeat or afro fusion projects have u worked on so far?
A. I have a total of 10 tracks, one of the tracks is tingaling, the rest are in studio
QN. You sing in luo as well?
A. Yes
QN. How do you feel about the attention Ezzy is getting as a fellow luo?
A. Its a good feeling, he is an inspiration, personally I love what he is doing.
QN. In which languages do you deliver art?
English and Acholi. I want to be different, Luganda Is I a little monotonous.
QN. How are you penetrating the industry back home in Northern Uganda
A. I have enjoyed some little airplay but because I'm financially handicapped, its hard to go full board with promotion since I don't have a management team.
QN. Where are you based as an artist?
A. I am based in Mukono (Central) but I'm from Northern Uganda
QN. Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
A. Having a successful in-house Record Label.
QN. What did you study at University?
A. I did procurement and logistics and graduated in 2019
